Las Vegas, NV – Today, Nevada Attorney General Adam Paul Laxalt announced that Ronald Hunt, 39, of Las Vegas, was sentenced for one count of furnishing a controlled substance to a state prisoner, a category “B” felony. Hunt, a former correctional officer with the Nevada Department of Corrections (NDOC), pleaded guilty to the charge earlier this year. The crime was committed in September 2014.
While working at the NDOC, Hunt provided marijuana to inmates at High Desert State Prison. In exchange for the drugs, he accepted payment by wire transfer from members of the inmates’ families.
“Corrections officers who abuse their positions of trust by providing contraband to inmates put the safety of others, inmates, visitors and their co-workers at risk,” said Laxalt. “This crime, having been committed by a public safety officer tasked with enforcing laws, not breaking them, is especially egregious, and my office will continue to prosecute cases with the aim of restoring public trust in government.”
Eighth Judicial District Court Judge Kerry Earley sentenced Hunt to 12-30 months in prison, suspended, provided he completes a fixed three-year term of probation.
