Attorney General Laxalt Issues Statement on President Obama’s Supreme Court Nomination

March 26, 2016

Carson City, NV – Today, Nevada Attorney General Adam Paul Laxalt issued the following statement regarding President Obama’s nomination of Merrick Garland to the U.S. Supreme Court:

“Our founding fathers entrusted the president with the power to nominate Supreme Court justices and the Senate with the power to provide advice and consent to the nomination. In their wisdom, the founders gave both branches of government a voice when it came to choosing a Supreme Court justice. Today, the president nominated Merrick Garland asthe replacement for Justice Antonin Scalia. Justice Scalia was a lion of liberty and a jurist who valiantly defended, preserved and protected our Constitution. A majority of the Senate has said that they will not vote on any nominee until the American people have weighed in at the ballot box and the next president of the United States is sworn into office. This lifetime appointment will have a dramatic impact on individual freedoms and the direction of our country. It is my hope that Nevadans will have a hand in such a critical appointment, and that the Senate will exercise its constitutional power and not vote on any nominee until after the next president—democrat or republican—is sworn into office.”
