Attorney General Adam Paul Laxalt Issues Statement in Support of Marsy’s Law

June 6, 2017

Carson City, NV – Today, Nevada Attorney General Adam Paul Laxalt issued the following statement in support of the passage of Marsy’s Law (Senate Joint Resolution 17). The resolution proposes an amendment to the Nevada Constitution in an effort to expand victims’ rights:

“I am proud to have endorsed and championed Marsy’s Law since my inauguration in 2015,” said Laxalt. “With the passage of Marsy’s Law last night, we are one step closer to enshrining victims’ rights into Nevada’s Constitution. Over the next 18 months, I look forward to having meaningful conversations with the voters about ensuring victims of crime are treated with dignity and respect throughout the criminal justice process.”

Marsy’s Law would elevate to the Constitution the right of victims to be informed of the status of criminal proceedings concerning the crime or crimes committed against them, the right to be present at public hearings concerning those crimes, and the right to be notified and heard at all proceedings for the sentencing or release of persons convicted of those crimes, among others.

In order for Marsy’s Law to ultimately become a part of Nevada’s Constitution, the resolution must be voted on by the people in 2018. For more information on Senate Joint Resolution 17, visit leg.state.nv.us.
