Attorney General Ford Encouraged by Ruling on Refusal of Care Rule

November 6, 2019

Carson City, NV - Today, Nevada Attorney General Aaron D. Ford released a statement following a Court's decision to invalidate the Trump Administration's "refusal of care" rule and prevent it from taking effect:

"My office has opposed every attempt by the Trump Administration to diminish the rights and needs of Nevadans, and access to health care is no exception. Had this rule gone forward, it would have allowed individuals and entire institutions to deny lawful and medically necessary care to patients, even during emergency situations. I'm encouraged that the courts have blocked yet another attempt to implement a discriminatory rule."

In May of this year, AG Ford joined a coalition of 23 cities, states and municipalities in a federal lawsuit to prevent this rule from taking effect. The rule sought to expand the ability of businesses and individuals to refuse to provide necessary health care on the basis of businesses' or employees' "religious beliefs or moral convictions."

In addition to Nevada, other states and cities joining this lawsuit include: the City of New York, Colorado, Connecticut, Delaware, the District of Columbia, Hawai'i, Illinois, Maryland, Massachusetts, Michigan, Minnesota, New Jersey, New Mexico, New York, Oregon, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, Vermont, Virginia, Wisconsin, the City of Chicago, and Cook County, Illinois.
