Carson City, NV - Today, Nevada Attorney General Aaron D. Ford released vital information for members of the military, veterans and their families regarding free legal assistance through his Office of Military Legal Assistance. The program pairs military service members in need of legal assistance with pro bono private legal counsel for civil matters.
The Office of Military Legal Assistance will continue to provide services to military members and families in need. In-person legal workshops that help veterans with wills, powers of attorney and other consumer protection matters have been canceled until further notice, but eligible Nevadans may access assistance by phone, email (nvagomla@ag.nv.gov) or going to the Office of Military Legal Assistance website.
"My office remains committed to providing services and helping those in need during this crucial time," said AG Ford. "Whether it's providing free legal services or connecting service members and veterans with resources and remedies, we're here to help our Nevada military families."
During this national pandemic, Nevada military families and veterans are vulnerable to evictions, loss of employment and becoming targets of fraud. Military families should be aware that many courts have stayed eviction hearings and the State of Nevada has lifted certain unemployment benefit restrictions. Those in need of legal assistance are encouraged to take advantage of the free legal aid and services provided by AG Ford's Office of Military Legal Assistance.
Additionally, the PenFed Foundation COVID-19 Emergency Financial Relief Program provides financial assistance to all veterans, active military service members and those currently serving in the Reserves and National Guard who are experiencing a financial setback due to the effects of the pandemic. The grant amount will support one month of payment up to $1,500 in the areas of rent, mortgage, auto loan/lease and utilities. Those interested in applying may do so here.
Nevada veterans are encouraged by the Veterans Affairs (VA) healthcare system to take the following precautions to avoid exposure to the virus:
- Wash your hands often with soap and water;
- Avoid touching your eyes, nose and mouth with unwashed hands;
- Stay home if you are sick or becoming sick; and
- Use an alcohol-based hand sanitizer that contains at least 60% alcohol.
Any veteran with symptoms such as fever, cough or shortness of breath should immediately contact their local VA facility. Veterans are encouraged to use the virtual care options available through the VA online healthcare such as MyHealth Vet to send a secure message to the VA or use Telehealth to explain their condition and receive a prompt diagnosis.
