Carson City, NV – Nevada Attorney General Catherine Cortez
Masto announced Wednesday two grant opportunities for Nevada programs aimed at
the prevention of violence against women.
“These grants provide much needed resources to our non-profit service
providers, law enforcement and judicial partners to strengthen public safety in
areas that need it most,” said Masto.
The grants are funded by the federal Violence Against Women Act and are
awarded to the Nevada Attorney General’s Office to administer annually to
programs throughout the state. This year’s available grants are the Services
Training Officers Prosecution (STOP) with $1,544,461 in total monies and Sexual
Assault Services Provider (SASP) that includes a $280,581 grant.
In 2012, Nevada ranked sixth as the state with the highest homicide rate
among female victims killed by male offenders in single victim/single offender
incidents. According to the
Violence
Policy Center Annual Report the state’s rate of 1.83 female deaths per
100,000 topped the national average of 1.16.
The programs eligible for these grants should provide victim-centered
intervention through non-profit service providers, law enforcement, prosecution
and courts. The mission of these programs should be to enhance victim safety and
hold offenders accountable for intimate partner violence that includes sexual
assault and stalking.
The deadline to turn in letters of intent is Oct. 10 while completed
applications mailed to the Carson City office are due by Nov. 3. Late
applications will not be accepted. To obtain the
