Attorney General Laxalt Prosecutes Two Las Vegas Men For Insurance Fraud

May 12, 2015

Las Vegas, NV – Nevada Attorney General Adam Paul Laxalt announced that Damien Dean Moses, 35, of North Las Vegas, pleaded guilty and was sentenced last week on one count of insurance fraud, a category “D” felony. Moses ran a scheme to help individuals, including co-defendant Guerreros Sanchez, 33, of North Las Vegas, commit insurance fraud. Sanchez also pleaded guilty to one count of insurance fraud.

In August 2014, Moses was paid approximately $250 by Sanchez to dispose of his 2013 Dodge truck, so that he could falsely report that the vehicle had been stolen. He hoped to benefit financially from his insurance coverage. Later, the vehicle was discovered burned and deemed to be a total loss. Sanchez also pleaded guilty to insurance fraud.

“Moses and Sanchez committed a financial crime against both the state and every honest consumer of insurance products,” said Laxalt. “My office will continue to bring to justice those who attempt to defraud the state.”

Eighth Judicial District Court Judge Douglas E. Smith sentenced Moses to 12-36 months in state prison. Moses was also ordered to pay more than $41,000 in restitution.

Moses’ identity was discovered as a result of an undercover operation organized by the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department in September 2014. He agreed to destroy a 2006 Ford truck for $200. During a recorded conversation with an acquaintance, Moses boasted that he helped individuals commit insurance fraud. He ultimately admitted to the fraudulent transaction with Sanchez, revealing that he used lighter fluid to burn the interior of Sanchez’s vehicle.

Moses was taken into custody at the sentencing hearing to serve his term of incarceration. Sanchez is scheduled to be sentenced by the Eighth Judicial District Court on June 10, 2015.

This case was prosecuted by Deputy Attorney General Michael C. Kovac and Deputy Attorney General Roger R. Madsen.
