Attorney General Masto Announces Criminal Charge in Nye County Sheriff’s Race Case

August 6, 2014

Las Vegas, NV – Nevada Attorney General Catherine Cortez Masto announced today that candidate for Nye County Sheriff, Rick Marshall, 56, of Pahrump, will face a misdemeanor charge of injury to property arising from a videotaped incident in which he was recorded removing political campaign signs that urged Nye County residents to vote for “Anybody but Rick for Sheriff.”

The charge arises from Marshall’s arrest on April 22, 2014. According to the complaint, Nye County Assistant Sheriff Marshall was found to be in possession, without permission, of signs which belonged to the political action committee (PAC) “Citizens to Elect an Ethical Nye County Sheriff.”

Marshall was found to be in possession of three signs, each valued at approximately three dollars. The maximum penalty for injury to property where there is less than $25 in damage is a $500 fine. Marshall is expected to appear in court to answer the charge on Sept. 9 at 9 a.m.

As with all criminal cases, the defendant is presumed to be innocent until proven guilty in a court of law. Click here for a copy of the criminal complaint.
